The Importance of the Entourage Effect

The Importance of the Entourage Effect

Have you ever wondered why Palmetto Harmony uses the whole plant instead of isolated cannabidiol (CBD)? It seems like a product claiming that it is “Pure CBD” would be stronger right? In reality, this is not true at all. Products using whole plant extract are almost always stronger than isolated CBD. This is where the importance of the entourage effect comes into play.

Interaction of the Entourage Effect

Isolated CBD is stripped of all compounds and terpenes found in the hemp plant. For example, a CBD isolate dose on average is 200mg’s. An average dose on a whole plant product like Palmetto Harmony is 20mg’s. The milligram dose is not only significantly smaller, but after switching to Palmetto Harmony, people have reported feeling relief from just 20 mg’s of CBD. This occurs because of a powerful synergistic interaction that takes place. This effect is known in the cannabis world as the “Entourage Effect”. The entourage effect refers to the positive interaction of the almost 480 natural compounds unique in the cannabis plant. This includes 66 cannabinoids, 120 terpenes and tons of other substances that could potentially benefit you.

Terpenes are the essential oils of the plants and are responsible for their healing properties. Similar to cannabinoids, terpenes bind to receptors in the brain to create certain effects. Therefore, a broad terpene profile is very important. Terpenes and cannabinoids work together to create the benefits of a product like Palmetto Harmony. Without cannabinoids and terpenes, the Entourage Effect cannot occur. Palmetto Harmony provides 3rd party lab testing upon request for you to see our broad terpene profile!

Products using whole plant extract can be almost an order of magnitude stronger than isolated CBD.

“Entourage effect” is a term first used by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam. He was the first chemist to be able to isolate CBD. He was also able to isolate its better known relative Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) way back in 1963! Dr. Mechoulam also has research on the endogenous cannabinoid system.  His postdoctoral researchers isolated a compound (anandamide) which you have in your body. This compound itself could be effective in the treatment of depression and anxiety. It is also mimicked by CBD and other cannabinoids in the brain (2).
